Before this year I had never watched the debates, but now I wish I had. I enjoyed the Democratic debate much more than the Republican debate. I liked how the Democratic debate was a lot more civil, and each candidate was generally respectful to their opponents. Something I chose to focus on during the debate was attitude, tone of voice, and composure of each candidate. I believe that the ability to calmly, confidently, and politely defend your positions or present your ideas is a trait that makes a good public leader. I liked how candidate O’Malley was really calm and collected when he answered questions, and even when he defended himself against another candidate’s views. He never raised his voice or started yelling, or got really defensive, and I think that has a lot to say about his personality and capabilities. I noticed Hillary Clinton had a superior “I-know-I’m-right” tone that made me feel intelligently and politically inferior and I found that unappealing. The Jeff guy got angry and defensive and was not allowing others to openly express their opinions without either accusing them or taking their comments personally.
Using the fact checking website I was surprised to find how several of the facts were actually true. After the Republican Debate fact check I was not expecting that. I didn’t read all of them, but from what I did read, it seemed like O’Malley was mostly saying things that were true. I also realized how little I know about politics and current issues because I didn’t know what a lot of the facts were actually talking about, which made it hard to understand the fact checking.
