Brave New World Seminar Reflection
A comment I particularly identify with, was Lia’s idea about creating a perfect society. She suggested that in order to have a perfect society, you would first need to kill off the weak and disabled people. The society can only advance if everyone holding it back is killed off. I thought it was interesting that Lia would be that bold in bringing up that idea. I agree with her idea. It would work once you got past the moral question. If you want to create a perfect society many things have to be sacrificed, including moral rights. The reaction from everyone was interesting too. Everyone was very upset by the suggestion.
I feel like I listened well to others ideas and was more willing to consider or accept them then I was in out last seminar. I think I did a good job of maintaining perspective throughout the seminar. This time the seminar wasn’t as difficult or unusual. Like before it was a big deal and I felt more nervous than I did this time.
A key idea I will take away from the seminar is about how we can’t just “give” stuff to people in need. We’ve addressed it before at some time, but it’s a really big revelation. If you give stuff to people, it will hurt them more than it will actually help them. I’m also going to think about the perfect society for a while. What you’d have to sacrifice to create a perfect society and how it would affect the world and economy. It’s a revelation about society that makes you think about the sacrifices we make.

OUTSIDERS SEMINAR REFLECTION
During our seminar, Brandon mentioned that it is human nature to divide things. I really liked his point because it explains how why we keep having issues with class, race, etc. At first I completely agreed with it, but then after I’d thought about it for a little while I realized another point. In the story context we were discussing how rich kids have an aloofness. I realized that it is mostly human nature, but it’s also that each generation teaches the history of human division to children. Even if our parents are telling us not to notice the differences or not to divide, by teaching us about them, we still get that idea. A lot of our society flaws come from human nature flaws.
I made several connections during the seminar, but right now I have two. First when we were discussing which group had it worse, the Socs or the Greasers, it reminded of our seminar after watching the movie Mean Girls. During that seminar we discussed whether girls or boys had it worse. Most girls said that girls had it worse, while boys thought they had it worse. My second connection is to the book Divergent I’m reading right now. I’m not sure what made me think of it but I connected the faction Dauntless to the group of Socs. The Dauntless faction values bravery the most, and to prove it they jump off moving trains and other dangerous things like the Socs, who do it because they have nothing better to do.
During the seminar I think I talked too much. I think I did a good job coming up with new ideas, although some of my ideas just caused the conversation to veer of topic a little bit. I think I could work on making personal connections instead of just broad connections. I have the personal connections I just feel awkward sharing them since they’re personal. I also think I could get better at inviting un-participating people into the conversation and listening to their ideas instead of only contributing my own.
I think some of the most beautiful lines are when Ponyboy discovers the note Johnny wrote him and it talks about the meaning of the poem. That it’s gold when you’re a kid and everything is green, but that as you get older that’s when it turns to day. I thought it was a good metaphor and had a lot of meaning coming from the voice of Johnny.
